LETTER TO THE READER Dear Reader, The annual U.P. National Writers' Workshop is undoubtedly the most anticipated of the Likhaan's many programs. Through the years, it has emerged from its humble beginnings to become a big part of the aspiring young writer's "rites of passage" into the Writers' Circle. And for those who have "done the rounds" in many different workshops all over the country, many consider the National Writers' Workshop a large part of the circumference. Last October 18, the latest of these workshops opened in Samal Island off the coast of Davao City. Again, the 15 chosen fellows from all over the country gathered with a distinguished panel of teaching staff to have their works critiqued and their talents honed. Of course, this process is not always clean and simple. Paradise Island, as the resort is named, had its share of "butchery". In this issue, we wish to bring that "workshop experience" to a wider audience and to likewise pay tribute to what was another exciting, albeit brief, workshop. "To stimulate writers from all parts of the Philippines to contribute to national cultural development" is the first of Likhaan's two-fold aim, and by featuring the works and activities of 35th National Writers' Workshop, we also demonstrate exactly that to our readers. We have put together a variety of things in this issue. For one, the literary works by the 15 fellows encompass a diverse range of Philippine languages. And the picture pages in the News Section features a variety of events during the Workshop. We hope you enjoy it. Happy Reading! Gio
